When DVRC first shared the vision for its new shelter and resource center, it existed as blueprints, renderings, and a promise—a promise that, together with the community, a place of safety, healing, and hope could become a reality for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

The Building Begins to Rise
Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors, partners, and supporters, construction is moving forward at an exciting pace. The project has officially gone vertical, with steel beams now rising from the foundation and decking being installed across the structure. In the coming weeks, crews will begin framing the building, transforming architectural plans into the welcoming spaces that will soon support survivors on their journeys toward safety and independence.
Every beam represents more than construction progress. It represents a family that will have a secure place to sleep. A child who will experience peace instead of fear. A survivor who will have access to the resources, advocacy, and compassionate support needed to build a brighter future.
Preparing for Opening Day
While the construction site is buzzing with activity, another important kind of building is happening behind the scenes.
The DVRC team recently completed a comprehensive strategic planning process that will guide the organization’s future as it expands its reach and deepens its impact throughout the community. Staff members are also developing new policies, procedures, and operational systems to ensure that from the very first day the shelter opens, survivors will receive exceptional care and support.
This work may not be as visible as steel and concrete, but it is just as essential. Creating a safe, welcoming, and trauma-informed environment requires thoughtful planning, dedicated staff, and a steadfast commitment to serving survivors with dignity, compassion, and excellence.
A First Look Is Coming Soon
Many supporters have asked when they will be able to visit the site. While the project is not yet ready for hard hat tours, that milestone is drawing closer. As soon as it is safe and practical to welcome visitors, supporters will be among the first invited to experience the progress firsthand and see the impact their generosity has made possible.

For nearly five decades, the Domestic Violence Resource Center (DVRC) in Reno, Nevada, has been a lifeline for individuals and families escaping the cycle of abuse. Since opening Nevada’s first domestic violence shelter in 1977, they have supported more than 164,000 survivors with safety planning, counseling, housing stability, legal advocacy, and access to essential resources like food, transportation, and diapers. Every year, their team of dedicated advocates and volunteers answer crisis calls, provide thousands of bed nights, and guide families toward healing and hope.
